What We're Seeing So Far From The California Truck Check (CTC) Program
California’s Clean Truck Check (CTC) program is catching many people off guard, including heavy-duty vehicle owners, DMV staff, and even smog testing centers. As this new program rolls out, we wanted to report on what we're seeing out there in the early days, and help smog testing centers and automotive service providers get into the space.
What's Going On?
Recently, California smog testing centers have started receiving requests to perform HD I/M Clean Truck Check (CTC) tests. These requests are driven by DMV renewal notices that state:
"CARB Non-Compliant Vehicle: CARB Clean Truck Check Required"
We are hearing that heavy-duty vehicle owners assume the Clean Truck Check is just another smog test, but it's not. Even DMV representatives are reportedly directing owners to get a smog check instead of the specific CTC test. This miscommunication is leaving heavy-duty vehicle owners confused.
Also, we are hearing of some CTC testers charging $200(!) per vehicle. We don't expect prices to stay this high, but is a reminder that fleet owners understand that a vehicle not on the road is one not generating revenue.
What is the Clean Truck Check?
The California Air Resources Board (CARB) Clean Truck Check is a program designed to reduce emissions from heavy-duty trucks and buses. Unlike standard smog tests, the CTC focuses on compliance with CARB's regulations for heavy-duty vehicles.
